It is too hot to cook! Green smoothies are a staple for me in the summer. When it’s hot out I don’t always want to cook and green smoothies are a great way to pack a lot of nutrition into an easy to make “meal.” This is my go to breakfast during warm months.
Blending greens breaks down their tough cellular wall and makes them really easy to digest. Maca, spirulina and wheatgrass powder add some extra nutrition.
The Superfoods
Maca is a root that is native to South America. It boasts a long list of potential benefits including natural hormone regulation, increased energy and helping to alleviate depression and anxiety. It is also a nutrient dense food and adds iron, vitamins and minerals to this smoothie.
Spirulina is one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet! For those following a plant based diet, this blue-green algae is a great source of iron and protein. It also contains significant amounts of other vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, B vitamins and calcium.
Wheatgrass, while from the wheat plant, is actually gluten free. The seeds of the wheat kernel contain gluten but the grass does not. Like spirulina and maca, wheatgrass is a food that is full of nutrition. It is touted for its anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory powers and it’s full of vitamins and minerals. If you have a juicer, it’s quite easy to grow and juice your own wheatgrass. I’m currently relying on dehydrated wheatgrass juice to keep things easy. Amazing Grass is what I’ve been using recently.
The Blender
You will find that there a huge difference between your standard kitchen bender and a high speed blender. If you want to make green smoothies, I highly recommend getting a high speed blender. This will allow you to completely pulverize tough greens and will make your smoothies smooth (smoothies with bits of unblended greens just aren’t great).
I have been using my Vitamix for over a decade. I realize that spending hundreds of dollars on a blender isn’t always feasible but if you can do it, these things can do pretty much everything and they last forever. If you don’t need the large container size of the Vitamix, plan to use the blender mostly for smoothies or you want a more affordable option, the NutriBullet is a great blender. It’s a personal sized blender with lots of power. Unlike most other personal blenders, this one can actually pulverize greens. I have this in my kitchen and use it daily.
